The elders bin

Hello Reader,

Through the years I've had a lot of astrology readings, human design readings, tarot readings, guidance sessions, you name it, I've tried a bunch of them. And every single one of them made me feel seen and understood, like really seen. (Clearly while on my journey of self-discovery, I needed a lot of confirmation…another little lesson for helping people you work with) But almost every single one of them also left me thinking, ok well now what? Like what do I actually freaking do with this information. Implementation is the hardest part, I swear.

And the same thing happens with courses, workshops, group programs, all of it. When you've got really good information and really good concepts but you don't give people help with the implementation piece, they can walk away thinking the exact same thing. Well, now what.

So I came across a weird example of this near where I live. There's a recycling and garbage area for the county, and they've got these bins kind of buried a little into the dirt so it's easier to toss stuff in, and a couple of them just say "Elders" on them. I had no idea what that meant at first. (I’m not in the habit of calling certain generations “elders” and I thought at first it was a company name.) I was just standing there trying to figure out where in the world I was supposed to put a bunch of cardboard boxes, and there was no bin that said cardboard, nothing, so I'm just kind of standing there looking confused.

And then this lovely older man pulls in and notices me standing there, and I ask him if he knows where the cardboard goes, and he goes, "Oh I don't know, I'm over 65, we just get to throw everything in the elders bins." And then he very kindly offered to help me put it into this magical bin that handles whatever. He said “if anyone asks we'll just say it's mine," and gave me a wink.

And I just thought, that's it. That's knowing your audience right there.

Because this area is mostly retirees and instead of hiring more staff to answer the same ten questions over and over all day, somebody just figured out the simplest possible fix. Throw it all in, we'll sort it later. (I’m going to believe someone does sort through it eventually…please let me live in that dream land.) It's kind of genius really, and it works.

So take a look at the last module in your own course, like right at the very end of it. Does it end with an idea, or does it end with a step? Because if someone finishes it and their very next thought is well now what, that's a place to start.

And you don't have to rebuild the whole thing to close it either. Just add a short section at the end. What to do next, what it might look like, maybe even what a couple of your past people did with it once they got there. Give them the elders bin. Make it so easy they don't even have to ask.

If you want a second set of eyes on where that gap might be in your own content, that's what we actually dig into in a Clarity Session. One of my superpowers is the ability to see things from many perspectives and help see those places where things get challenging for people trying to learn.

WEBSITE · COURSE HUB · FREE GUIDE Hello Reader, Did you realize the promises on your sales page can keep helping your people long after they click buy? THIS WEEK KEEP THE PROMISE IN FRONT OF THEM What annoys me when I see people talking about creating courses is the big long checklist: write your sales page, write your email sequence, do all the marketing, decide whether to run ads, plan the webinars leading up to the launch, and somewhere in there, creating the course is one step. I've spent...

WEBSITE · COURSE HUB · FREE GUIDE Hello Reader, Do you journal, or occasionally go back through old emails or texts? I journal more regularly now than I used to, and it's interesting to go back and see how differently I thought. THIS WEEK GIVE IT A SECOND LOOK When I look back at the things I was really worried about or obsessing over, they seem so unimportant now. Or I think, "Oh, if only young me could have had this little bit of information, it would have been better." You can do the same...

Hi Reader, A while back I had an idea for something I wanted to make, and I got pretty far into it. And the thought of tossing all that work made me keep going way longer than I should. But every time I looked at it, it didn't feel helpful enough or full enough or whatever enough I was going for, so I kept adding to it, another section, another example, another piece that was supposed to finally make it work. It never did. What I eventually figured out was that I'd trapped myself with the...
