I'm getting on my soapbox for a minute

Hello Reader,

Excuse me while I get my soapbox in place here, because I need to vent for a moment.

I just read an article about course creators, and it talks about three different types of teachers. The first one is all about AI, the second is focused on marketing, and the third is a blend of both. And the thing that makes me frustrated is that nowhere in here is there talk about the actual course content, you know, the thing people are paying you for.

And I get that you need marketing…you can't just put something out there and expect people to show up. You can ask Claude or ChatGPT or any of the others to create a course based on a certain topic, and it will pump out something. But when "use AI to build it fast" and "market it well" are the two things being celebrated, the actual content, the thing people are paying for, feels like an afterthought instead of being THE BIG thought!

And it's been the thing that I have said multiple times when people talk about creating a course. So first, they want to work on the sales page and the email sequence and then they build the course and then they focus on the post email sequence and then the follow up and maybe even a webinar to launch it. It ends up being a list of a dozen things. And what gets me going is that the course creation is just like a little blip. One little thing. And I realize it doesn't necessarily mean they're not spending time and thought and creative juices and passion and whatever in creating that course. But the fact that it is so minor in these flows annoys the crap out of me.

And informational courses are not helpful anymore because I can get the information anywhere. Instead, tell me what to do with the information. Tell me your unique view. Tell me what to do with all of it that will make my life better, that will make my business better, that will do whatever it is that you do. Do more than just give me info.

There are ways to do it so that people can digest the information better, they can actually apply what they're learning better, they can walk away not just with some good information but with tools and practices and implementation that actually gets them to do something better. And I am sure there are a lot of you who are already doing that. But I'm also sure that when you are trying to run a business and you are doing all of the things, sitting down to work on a course with all of your knowledge can quickly get overwhelming, because you want to tell them everything. You want to share everything you know, and rightly so. But you've got to be able to pull some things back. You have to make it manageable for those who are taking it, to actually be able to drink from it rather than getting it shot at them out of a fire hose.

And the last thing I would want is for people in your course to just get overwhelmed or just get frustrated because they can't figure out what to do next, or that they're like, yeah, that's great, but now what? And there isn't an answer for that in the course. Those are the things that I can help with.

So if you're looking for somebody who wants to show you how to use AI to make a course really fast, I'm not your gal, and if you want somebody focused on marketing and getting it out there, I'm not her either. But if you have years of working with people and a stockpile of knowledge you're struggling to get out to them, then you and I need to talk, because that is what I can help you with.

I will now step off my soapbox. Thanks for listening. I feel better now.

And I am trying something a little bit different this week. Instead of typing, I am recording this using Wispr Flow, which I've been using for about a week now and it has really helped. I just hit a couple keys and start talking in any program and even on my phone, and it does a great job of taking out the ums and the other little words. A lot of things have voice to text, but not every place does. It's just made it easier because if I can just start talking, it's a lot easier for me than sitting down and starting to type. (And yes I did go back and did some editing because this was twice as long.) 🫣 So if this is something you also struggle with I would say check it out. They do have a free version. It does have a limited number of words and I had to go to the pro because I ramble and I use a lot of words but try it out. This is a free pro month. Check out Wispr Flow here.

And if you want to work with me on your course, I've got a couple things coming up. In the meantime, you can always sign up for a 90-minute Course Clarity Session with me and we can dive into whatever you're working on, and you can walk away with clarity, an action plan, and some real motivation to actually get the course made. Or if you just want to have a quick conversation, book a 15-minute free chat and let's talk!

WEBSITE · COURSE HUB · FREE GUIDE Hello Reader, Did you realize the promises on your sales page can keep helping your people long after they click buy? THIS WEEK KEEP THE PROMISE IN FRONT OF THEM What annoys me when I see people talking about creating courses is the big long checklist: write your sales page, write your email sequence, do all the marketing, decide whether to run ads, plan the webinars leading up to the launch, and somewhere in there, creating the course is one step. I've spent...

WEBSITE · COURSE HUB · FREE GUIDE Hello Reader, Do you journal, or occasionally go back through old emails or texts? I journal more regularly now than I used to, and it's interesting to go back and see how differently I thought. THIS WEEK GIVE IT A SECOND LOOK When I look back at the things I was really worried about or obsessing over, they seem so unimportant now. Or I think, "Oh, if only young me could have had this little bit of information, it would have been better." You can do the same...

Hi Reader, A while back I had an idea for something I wanted to make, and I got pretty far into it. And the thought of tossing all that work made me keep going way longer than I should. But every time I looked at it, it didn't feel helpful enough or full enough or whatever enough I was going for, so I kept adding to it, another section, another example, another piece that was supposed to finally make it work. It never did. What I eventually figured out was that I'd trapped myself with the...
